Egyption People in the Streets to "Petiton for a Redress of Grievences"

President Obama delivered a very pretty salad of crowd pleasing palliatives in Cairo about 19 months ago which contained applause drawing words like “freedom and democracy” “justice and tolerance,” and the always popular
“human rights.”

The 6000 word address was similar to others he delivered during his 2008 campaign and since, to various audiences composed of disparate groups like labor and business, left and right, wall street and main street. The basic template of this address nearly always brings good reviews.

The intent and effects are the same; to calm the nerves of this or that group, to buy some time or a few points in the polls while hand to hand combat continues behind the scenes in the vaudeville of American politics. These speeches aren’t new, most presidents have hiked the same trail. The words that make up the applause lines are shifted and altered to suit an audience that changes like the antique backdrop of a silent movie. (more…)

Tennessee makes... up history.

Just Call For A Rewrite

Somewhere in the quiet hollers of Tennessee history is being made…up.

I saw this coming last week when a publishing house decided they would get better sales of Huck Finn if they rewrote it to reflect our modern sensitivity to the truth.

Just hit “ctrl f” on the keyboard, enter the word you wish to remove, then enter the word you wish to exchange for the offending word or passage and hit the enter key.

Almost instantly 219 offensive words are replaced with something more appealing to the modern palate, just print it and you’ve changed history, straightened out the present and saved the republic.

This works as well for paragraphs, passages, even chapters. Bad actors disappear and are replaced with more agreeable characters, unfortunate events, years, decades, entire centuries swapped for happy days. (more…)

Political Advertising

Fight Citizens United by Filtering Out False Political Advertising

The mid term elections of 2010 have been memorable for sheer goofiness as well as for the corporate funded blanket of ugly, false and misleading political advertising that has been lowered over the public airwaves. With the addition of a mountainous heap of money provided by greedy plutocrats, election cycles have become national holidays from reason and sanity that fall between their mates, Halloween and Thanksgiving.

I have little trouble tuning out most of this detestable crud, knowing as I do that it’s filled with half truths, distortions and bold faced lies. In this sense the supreme court’s licensing of corporate political advertising in campaign ads is little different from the every day advertising for goods and services that absorb a large percentage of air time on nearly every channel.

I’m not a believer, I don’t buy disposable mop heads that promise to revolutionize my life, or small sheets of fabric to place in the dryer to protect myself from static cling. The hundreds of millions that corporate America is spending on this election is wasted on me and on anyone else who doesn’t believe that signing up for a “free” credit report will improve your credit or that tax protection and relief ads which promise to negotiate with the IRS will actually do anything but empty your pockets more efficiently. Waiting for Sanityman: Can Jon Stewart Save America?

By Marty Kaplin

The fate of our country won’t be decided by a politician. It will be determined by a comedian.

Not long before Jon Stewart announced his Rally to Restore Sanity, he told a New York magazine writer why he and his crew on The Daily Show would never do something like that. “We’re not activists,” he said. “Maybe the nice thing about being a comedian is never having full belief in yourself to know the answer. So you can say all this stuff, but underneath, you’re going, ‘But of course, I’m f—ing idiotic.’ It’s why we don’t lead a lot of marches.”

Waiting for Jewman

By Marty Kaplin

Jon Stewart did his show, business as usual, on Rosh Hashanah this year. That night, when his interview guest, Meghan McCain, daughter of Senator John McCain, greeted him with “Happy New Year,” Stewart looked uncharacteristically nonplussed for a nanosecond, before replying, “What? Huh? See you in Times Square tonight.” (more…)

Letting The Demons In

Christians, at least the fundamentalist or evangelical version, if you listen to them, will likely tell you that they are under attack, in fact suffering from persecution.

These attacks are coming at them from all quarters, the dark world of Islam, the secular humanists, Teletubbies, the fiction of Dan Brown, and now…get ready, Yoga.

In this video Mark Martin and Wendy Griffith of CBN (Christian Broadcasting Network) inform the audience that Yoga can be dangerous to Christians because it “contains a spiritual component.” (more…)

Tell Teabaggers and Plutocrats Alike: NO! Vote Democratic

In an essay at Huff Post yesterday, ” Obama’s Critics Are Dead Wrong” Frank Schaeffer wrote:

“Before he’d served even one year, President Obama lost the support of the easily distracted left and engendered the white hot rage of the hate-filled right. But some of us, from all walks of life and ideological backgrounds — are sticking with our president. Why? Because he is succeeding. Obama’s critics from the left and right are going to be proved dead wrong.

We Obama supporters still trust our initial impression of him as a great, good and uniquely qualified man to lead us.

Obama’s steady supporters will be proved right. Obama’s lefty critics will be remembered as easily panicked and prematurely discouraged at best and his critics on the right will be remembered as nothing but shriveled hate mongers.”

I’m wildly ambivalent about Frank’s post. I don’t know what he intends with the use of “lefty” here, but I’m a liberal, I’m disappointed with the rate of progress of the Obama administration, I’m not panicky nor easily distracted and I agree and disagree with Schaeffer at the same time.

Did Obama and the Dems get dealt a bad hand? Yes. They were dealt what Bud Abbot told Lou Costello was a “fliddly diddly” as Bud claimed the pot. “What’s that?” Lou said. “No two cards alike,” said Bud as he raked in the chips. (more…)

Go To Church, Or Not, Your Choice, Then Shut Up Already

[Editor’s note: Contrary to the bleatings of the religious right and the pandering prattle of the hordes of hypocritical office seekers groveling for their votes I believe the problem is not a lack of religion but too damn much of it. Below is my response to Obama ‘Christian By Choice’: President Responds To Questioner at Huffington Post. Bob Higgins]

Obama’s religion, or lack of it, is of no interest to me whatsoever. If I had a choice in the matter, Presidents would attend to the constitution and refuse to address the subject of their personal religious views or preferences.

Article 6 of the Constitution unambiguously prohibits religious tests for holding public office: (more…)

Look Out Islam: Here Comes the Texas Board of Education

The so called free market seems to be driving the fundamentalist push in Texas to revise the histories of the state, the country, the world, and now Islam to reflect the views and protect the sensibilities of Baptists, evangelicals and deep south fundamentalists in general.

Should you find that your kids are coming home spouting a lot of junk history and religious claptrap filtered through some deep fried fundamentalist lens, blame the Texas State Board of Education and the text book publishers who pee their pants when the board snaps their fingers or passes a resolution.

“The sheer size of Texas’ textbook market means that the state’s requirements and sensitivities have considerable influence on what publishers produce.”  Texas school board debates ‘pro-Islamic’ bias in textbooks Kari Huus

Texas buys enormous quantities of textbooks. The market says that the biggest most profitable customers get what they want. Texas wants to decide what is, or is not, historical truth. The market decides who will write history. (more…)

This is from a comment thread to Bob Cesca’s post at Huff Post titled “Despite America’s Temper Tantrum, It’s Still a Center-Left Nation”

Fair TV a self proclaimed “traditional conservative” launched an attack on Democrats and Liberals.
FAIRTV Commented:

Ah, the once proud Democratic party. Are there no democrats left who will stand up to the Idiot Left with their frontal assault on American Freedoms?
You Coastal Elite…..watch what the American People can do when they find their freedoms under attack by the Fringe Left.
If this is a center left country, why are the Lefties afraid to even use the term “Liberal” any more instead choosing the more “acceptable” “Progressives?”
Democrats today are held hostage by Thug Union Bosses, Wacko Environmentalists, Pro-Abortionists, the Radical Gay Lobby, Anti-gun zealots, Anti-religious bigots, and dim-witted Hollywood types. It’s a shame to see a once proud Democrat party reduced to a National Joke.

TraceyES Comment in reply to FairTV:Er…can you enumerate your freedoms which are currently under assault by Democrats? Go ahead, make a list for us. Waiting…waiting…

FAIRTV Responded to TraceyES:The right to life
The right to bear arms
The right to live in a country with secure borders
The right to live in a country with laws that are enforced
The right to First Amendment speech, in spite of the language police
The right to believe in God and tell others about that faith
The right to hold conservative, traditional views without being labelled a “racist.”

Speaking at the annual right wing festival of crazy better known as the “Value Voters Summit” Newton Gingrich called for a federal ban on Sharia law in the US.

Stop and think about that for just a second… we already have a ban on religious influence in our courts, don’t we? Yes, I believe it’s called the 1st Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. (more…)

I’m not a big fan of symbolism, religious or political; the flag waving at the Olympics, hands held over hearts at ball games and auto races, fingers pointed at the sky or genuflection in the end zone strikes me as empty, meaningless, affected behavior. I prefer more tangible substance, facts and deeds over these public “going through the motions” displays of piety and patriotism.  But that’s just me.

If I did care for symbolism this would be the week that I opted for the great symbolic slam dunk, the turducken of religious and nationalistic display. I would get a bunch of “holy books” all the usual stuff “the majors” and all the other “holy” tomes I could find and wrap them in an Israeli flag, then an Iraqi flag, followed by the flag of Iran and the US Stars and Stripes. I would tie the package up in a prayer rug of the kind advertised by late night TV evangelists in exchange for a “love offering” and set fire to the whole silly mess in the nearest place that allows bonfires, sit down, pop open a beer and call the media.

I’d likely become as famous as a rock star in 24 hours.

They call him “pastor,” they call him reverend, they say he is “godly,” a holy man, beloved of and by “god.” “They” as close as I can determine, are the approximately 50 people who are members of his Florida “church,” the Dove World Outreach Center… honest, that’s what they call it and it earns them a federal tax exemption. I’ve seen him. (more…)
