Colbert and Stewart Rally to Restore Sanity

Rally to Restore Sanity: Mock On Dudes!

The grousing and bitching, whining and backbiting over the “Rally to Restore Sanity” has begun well in advance of the event itself. Apparently there is a belief in some quarters that comedy and comedians shouldn’t be taken seriously and there is no place for levity in the world of politics or political activism.

Tell that to George Carlin, Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl or Aristophanes. There is always time to poke fun at the political world and its pretenders, to deride the arrogance and pomposity that rises like scud to obscure the surface of our public affairs.

Stewart and Colbert are at once being accused of “taking themselves too seriously” and making a “mockery of our political system.” To the first I say, wait for the rally. I’ll bet any seriousness will be found buried in a barrel of fun beneath a heap of laughter.

To the second, our political system is a mockery of itself, filled with candidates, handlers and other players who have devolved into gross caricatures of some of the more hare brained elements of our electorate and their idea of leadership.

If 75,000 people parading around the National Mall at the Glen Beckalooza last August wearing Colonial Williamsburg drag, three corner hats, tights and buckled shoes wasn’t absurd self parody, then I’m not sure what to think of it.

Stewart, Colbert and the satirical perspective they provide are among very few things on TV worth watching. They are both hysterically funny, strangely informative and over the years have become necessary to my personal sanity.

Yes, they enrage many of the pandering sycophants of the mainstream and good for them. The simple fact is that most of the mainstream media is either so cowed by corporate control or the fear of loss of access to the liars they cover that they have become useless as journalists.

The fact that the mainstream has largely treated Stewart’s Crossfire coup or Colbert’s artful destruction at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner as “unforgivable crimes” is proof of the media’s irrelevancy and abject cowardice.

When we need someone to speak truth to power the “media” is seldom to be found but our favorite phony news guys are on the job four nights a week.

This Saturday at the Rally to Restore Sanity they’re working overtime, I wont miss it. Mock On dudes.
